a bombshell announcement out of vatican city as the pope makes a move unseen in 600 years. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell pope benedict xvi sent shock waves around the globe this morning. he announced he's going to resign at the end of the month, right in the middle of the holy see son the lent. ktvu's alex savidge -- season of lent. ktvu's alex savidge has more with this means to the catholics in the bay area. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. pope benedict xvi decided to step down, he said, because he just doesn't have the mental and physical strength to lead the catholic church at 85 years of age. parishioners here at st. mary's

cathedral in san francisco, certainly caught offguard. many respect the decision. some believe he should have waited until after the easter holiday. the first pope to voluntarily resign in more than 700 years. pope benedict xvi made the stunning announcement this morning from the vatican. it came as a surprise even to his closest advisers. >> absolutely shocked. >> reporter: this was the reaction from the communications director at san francisco's catholic diocese. he says this -- he says this is a wise decision given that the pope feels it would hamper his ability to lead. >> it takes a lot of humility. here he is one of the most powerful people on the planet, in terms of a 1.2 billion member church. tremendous responsibility. >> reporter: pope benedict xvi took over in 2005 and is stepping aside during a period of crisis as the catholic church deals with the sex abuse

scandal and growing anger from the muslim world. but weselek says pope benedict xvi has made great strides on the issue of poverty and the developing world and helps move the catholic church in the modern area with social media. parishioners said they support his decision. some question the timing. >> if i were him, i would have resigned after let's say -- after easter. >> reporter: now, the vatican must begin the process of selecting the next pope. one of the chosen cardinals involved in the voting will actually be the retired archdiocese of san francisco. >> which is very exciting in the sense that even when a person becomes a cardinal, the chances of them voting for a new pope is minimal. >> reporter: san francisco's current archbishop released this statement today.

it said in part "this decision to step down was motivated by his own discernment of what best serves the good of the church." now, pope benedict xvi will leave on february 28th. the vatican hopes to have his successor which falls on easter this year. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. you can get more information on this by going to our channel 2 website, go to ktvu.com and click on the pope resigns tab. dozens of tires have been slashed in the city of concord and the senseless act of vandalism is costing many residents hundreds of dollars. brian flores is talking to some people and has more. >> reporter: we're live here at the 1400 of bel air drive at a condo complex. at least ten cars in this

complex alone had their tires slashed. an additional 50 in the concord area. residents -- residents are trying to find other ways to get around and are paying for it. some concord residents are left with frustration. >> we're looking at $800 replacing all of the four tires because it's all the four tires that were damaged. >> reporter: she has not the only one -- she was not the only one. police say the first calls came in before 7:00 a.m. on sunday targeting glazer drive, mochado drive and bel air drive. at least nine cars were hit at one condo complex. >> it's a non-gated entry. i think that would help, or maybe just someone patrolling. we don't really know what the situation is going to be. >> kind of disheartening. to see our customers coming in having to deal with that.

>> reporter: tire stores around concord were busy all day. the america's tire store saw their fair share of cars including some from one company. the manager describes what he's seen from the tires. >> very small pinholes. it's not like a knife. it looks like an ice pick or something. very, very small holes in the identify wall. something like that cannot be repaired safely. >> reporter: ktvu has learned that 11 cars were from contra costa arts community access program. the cars are meant to transport people. officials from the organization did not want to speak on cam you are but the organization says they had to shell out close to $900 apiece for each car that needed tires. back in april, at least 37 cars had their tires slashed at two

car dealerships. on christmas eve, four cars had their tires slashed as well. police say there's no known motive and no suspect description. back to you. >> thank you. police are on the lookout for copper thieves who are causing problems for bay area commuters. caltrans says thieves are tearing out copper wiring from metering lights, traffic signals, freeway signs and street lights all across the bay area. 5 -- 59 lights have been vandalized. only 18 have been rewired. the repairs are not cheap. it costs $35,000 to fix one meter. caltrans is using aluminum wire instead of copper and putting some control boxes underground. tonight, b.a.r.t. is holding the first of a series of community meetings to discuss a new law that would severely punish b.a.r.t. criminals. the new law would implement a man up to one year for riders who deface property or are violent. the law is scheduled to go into

effect in may. a new $1 million reward has prompted hundreds of tips to searches searching for fired los angeles police officer christopher dorner. miguel marquez joins us live from los angeles as the manhunt continues. good afternoon, miguel. >> reporter: hi, how are you there? yeah, the police are announcing that the tactical alert for the los angeles police department has been turned off at this point because they don't have as many calls coming in around the christopher dorner issue. but 600 leads they are chasing down. hundreds of investigators going through that. but so far, no really hot intense leads that investigators seem to have at the moment that the trail up in san bernardino seems to have been -- have gone cold for the moment, investigators saying they've gone through some 600 cabins there and searched those to see if mr. dorner is around. one thing this is causing around southern california is a lot of concern among many people. the lowe's home store this

weekend in northridge there was a call that came in. police thought this was a credible enough call but they responded in force. people came inside the lowe's, out of it, police went in. it was nothing more than a domestic dispute. but it gives you an idea of how concerned people are across this area. at this point, what we're going to be hearing is daily updates from l.a.p.d. we'll get another one at 3:00 today. but at the moment, it seems that the chase for mr. dorner around the search for mr. dorner has gone cold. back to you guys. >> all right, miguel, thank you. people who receive vouchers instead of cash at last -- who received vouchers instead of cash at the gun buyback last week can receive the cash this week. the january event was so successful, the 43,000 earmarked for weapons ran out

in an hour and a half. an additional $70,000 for vouchers were issued and they can be redeemed this friday at the marin civic center. another event is scheduled to take place february 23rd in the parking lot of the east palo alto city hall from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. residents from palo alto, east palo alto and menlo park are encouraged to surrender their guns. no questions asked and get up to $300. the death of a cal poly sophomore is under investigation. according to university police 20-year-old brandon hong was found unresponsive on campus saturday night. the second-year biology major from orinda was pronounced dead at the hospital. according to the vice president for student affairs, foul play is not suspected, but alcohol could possibly have been a factor. a rocket launch from the

janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. transportation officials gave a behind the scenes tour this morning to widen highway 4 and expand the service to antioch from b.a.r.t. this is part of the e-b.a.r.t. line. it would use diesel-powered trains between the pittsburg bay point and antioch stations. they estimate they will begin operations in about three years. san francisco tax payers could get stuck paying $20 million for the america's cup sailing race. the event is expected to cost between $31 million and $34 million. but the chronicle reports only half of that amount has been raised about 14 million. to help reduce costs, the event was scaled back. three teams will compete down from 12 entries originally. the downsizing has apparently caused corporate sponsors to lose interest. a former ship pilot who crashed the cosco busan is

suing to get his license back. the u.s. coast guard has refused to renew his license and the lawsuit includes him. the license would allow him to work as a captain or first mate but not as a guide for other captains. the cosco busan incident spilled more than 50,000 gallons of oil into the san francisco bay. the pentagon announced a groundbreaking decision this morning extending some military benefits to same-sex partners. the move comes about a year and a half after the u.s. military ended its don't ask/don't tell policy. in the statement leon panetta said the military would no longer provide some benefits to heterosexual couples while denaying them to same-sex couples in the -- denying them to same-sex couples in the

military. the change does not extend some housing benefits because the pentagon says the issue requires more review. people in parts of the northeast are still digging out and trying to get back to their normal routines today in the aftermath of the weekend's big nor'easter. the storm dropped up to three feet of snow from new york to maine. the weather system is being blamed for at least 15 deaths in the northeast and canada. utility crews from around the world are working to restore electricity across the region. about 130,000 customers still do not have power. that's down from 650,000 in eight states at the height of the storms. massachusetts was the hardest hit. a lot of people there have been forced into shelters because people say power may not be restored until tomorrow. >> this would be my second night and i'll probably have another one because the power still isn't on. >> there's good news for travelers. flights have resumed at major

airports in the area which can closed during the storm. nasa scientists held a collective breath this morning as an at last rocket lifted off from vandenberg air force base -- atlas rocket lifted off from the vandenberg air force base. this is the eighth launch. because of the failure of this and technical problem with 6 and 7, today's launch was considered critical for the conation of the -- continuation of the program. a warming trend is underway around the bay area. chances are, you are filling it because we are up by several degrees over yesterday at this hour. under mostly sunny skies a little bit of a breeze in the hills we have a north-northeast wind around fairfield. 13 miles per hour. up above, 1,000 feet or so, a little gusty.

for most anywhere from 5 to 10 miles an hour. the light winds will continue for today. ridge of high pressure driving those temperatures up. right now, 63 in napa, 63, santa rosa. low 60s walnut creek. hayward, oakland checking in right about 59 degrees. these numbers anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees warmer than we were 24 hours ago. napa and santa rosa closer to 10 to 12 degrees warmer than just a day ago. it's a warming trend that we are going to continue. pacific satellite view. ridge of high pressure over the pacific here. the back edge right about there keeping that storm track well to the north. in fact, it's becoming a bit concerning. 2013 looking awfully dry. some areas perhaps even breaking records at this point for january and now moving into mid-february. so check your grass. you may actually need to turn on the sprinklers. this warming trend will carry us all the way through the week. coming upper 60s in the forecast by thursday. it will be mild that day.

with the major market indexes near record highs, wall street is taking a pause today with no major economic reports being announced. stocks are modestly lower in afternoon trading. the s&p 500 ended last week at its highest level since november 2007. the dow is down 19. nasdaq down 7. s&p down 2. well, apple's stock is up about 1% this noontime. a news that could soon launch a new device. the new york times says apple is testing a device that looks like a wristwatch but does more than tell time. it uses the operating system and can be used to check text, e-mails or whether alerts. there were reports that apple
